The Day Clarence Climbed a Tree

Clarence is a groundhog who accidentally climbed a tree while trying to escape something scary. Now he’s stuck way up high and wondering how he got there in the first place. Clarence worries a lot—but with a little help from his friends, even a nervous groundhog can find his way back down.

When we reached the big tree by the barn, there was Luna.

Sound asleep under the tree.

Marigold trotted right up and started licking her face.

Luna growled.

I’m glad I’m not the only one.

Luna stood up and stretched. She looked up for a moment, then slowly looked over all of us.

She didn’t say anything.

Huskies are like that.

They only say something when it’s important.

Marigold, of course, said lots of things.

“Hi Luna! Whatcha doing today? How have you been? Did you know horses like goats for friends? Waffles has horses now!”

Luna looked quietly at Marigold and slowly shook her head.

Then she lifted her eyes and stared up into the tree.

Huskies are great at staring.

Sometimes I think they forget to blink.

And Luna was just staring into the tree.

All of us watched her.

Marigold.

Waffles.

Me.

We all followed Luna’s gaze and looked up.

“Oh,” I said.

“Who is that?”

Sadie
A thoughtful rough collie who likes to think things through. Sadie enjoys adventures—but she also likes to make sure everyone gets home safely.

Marigold
Sadie’s energetic sister who believes every moment is a good moment to play. If there’s a race, a game, or something mysterious to investigate, Marigold is already running toward it.

Luna
A calm and watchful husky who loves the moon and takes her howling very seriously.

Waffles
A cheerful goat who can jump higher than almost anyone and has a talent for turning anything into a game.

Clarence
A thoughtful groundhog who somehow ended up high in a tree—even though groundhog usually prefer the ground.
